StarID Password Assistance

Use the StarID Self Service site to activate your StarID, reset your password or lookup your StarID.

This is a self service site where you can manage your StarID password.

Technology Support cannot reset your StarID password for you.

StarID Password reset quick steps

  1. Visit the StarID Self Service website at starid.minnstate.edu

  2. Choose one of the options: Reset my Password, Activate my StarID or What is my StarID

  3. Select one of the following options on the next page (Tech ID, Email Address, etc.)

  4. Enter the requested information and set your password.

StarID Self Service Site Options

  1. Reset my password - this is your StarID password and your email address password

  2. Sign in to Profile to update your primary email or StarID notification email

  3. Activate your StarID and set up a password for the first time

  4. What is my StarID? - Look up what your StarID is.

Reset my password or Activate my StarID - Detailed Steps

Choose Reset my Password if you have set up a password previously and just to reset it. Choose activate my StarID if this is the first time you are setting a password for your StarID.

Next, you will be presented with these choices. Choose one of them. Students may choose option 1 and 2, employees have a 3rd option.

  1. I know my Tech ID
    Use your 8 digit college ID to reset your StarID password. You can find your Tech ID on your college ID card, or in eServices in the top right corner when you log in.

    1. Students, if you are unable to locate your Tech ID, you can contact Student Services and with photo verification, they will provide it to you.

    2. Employees, if you are unable to locate your Tech ID, contact HR.

  2. I know my email address
    Use your personal email address or your college email address to reset your StarID password.
    You will be sent a verification code to that email address so make sure it’s an email you are able to access right away.

  3. I know my State employee number
    Employees have the option of using their State employee number to reset their StarID password. This number is used for the MN Self Service site to log in and view W-2s and pay stubs.

Email Address:
The StarID system gets its list of email addresses from the student or employee record. Any email address created by the college or university or a personal email address on your record will appear on your StarID profile and can be used to reset your StarID password. Changes to email addresses are reflected on your StarID profile within 24 hours. 

To update the personal email address you have on file go to the Update Student Information page on the website. Students can also update their personal email address by logging into e-Services, going to Account Management, then Demographic Info, updating the Email Address Field at the bottom of the page, and pressing Submit.

StarID Password FAQs

  • Your StarID password expires every 180 days, which is every 6 months.

  • After a password reset it can take approximately 15 minutes and up to 4 hours to work with your college email.

  • You will receive a reminder to reset your StarID password before it expires to the email set as your StarID notification email in your StarID Self Service Profile.
